Social media platform X has announced it will suspend creator payouts for users who post AI-generated war videos without clearly disclosing that the content was created with artificial intelligence, as the platform grapples with a surge of synthetic media related to recent geopolitical conflicts.
The policy update targets creators participating in X’s Creator Revenue Sharing program, which allows eligible users to earn income from engagement on their posts. The company says the change is meant to prevent creators from financially benefiting from misleading AI-generated content during sensitive global events.
According to Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, creators who upload AI-generated videos depicting armed conflict without labeling them as AI-produced will lose access to the revenue-sharing program for 90 days.
Repeat violations will trigger permanent removal from monetization eligibility, meaning the user can no longer earn revenue from their content on the platform.
The rule focuses specifically on financial incentives rather than banning accounts outright. By targeting monetization, X aims to discourage creators from posting sensational or misleading AI content simply to generate viral engagement.
The policy change comes as social media feeds have been flooded with AI-generated battlefield videos following recent military escalations involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Some of these synthetic videos have gone viral, including clips falsely depicting:
Airstrikes on major landmarks
Missile attacks on military bases
Large-scale explosions that never occurred
In one case, an AI-generated clip showing an attack on the Burj Khalifa in Dubai spread widely across social media platforms, accumulating millions of views despite being fabricated.
The platform says enforcement will rely on several detection methods, including:
Community Notes, X’s crowd-sourced fact-checking system
Metadata signals indicating the use of generative AI tools
Other technical indicators suggesting synthetic media
If a post is flagged as AI-generated and lacks proper disclosure, it can trigger the monetization penalty.
X recently introduced a “Made with AI” label to help identify synthetic content and give users more transparency when viewing media generated by artificial intelligence.
