U.S. Government Puts GDP and Inflation Data Onchain With Chainlink

Official U.S. economic data is moving directly onto public blockchains. The U.S. Department of Commerce is using Chainlink to distribute government statistics including GDP, inflation and private-sector spending across 10 blockchain networks, giving smart contracts direct access to data produced by the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

The rollout creates six government-backed data feeds that developers can integrate into DeFi protocols, prediction markets, tokenized assets and other blockchain applications without manually entering new economic figures whenever the government releases them.

GDP and the Fed’s Favorite Inflation Gauge Go Onchain

The new Chainlink feeds cover three major measures of the U.S. economy.

Each indicator gets two feeds — one showing its current level and another tracking its annualized quarterly change.

The six feeds cover:

  • Real GDP — inflation-adjusted U.S. economic output
  • Real GDP Percent Change — quarterly growth at an annualized rate
  • PCE Price Index — changes in consumer prices
  • PCE Percent Change — annualized quarterly inflation changes
  • Real Final Sales to Private Domestic Purchasers — inflation-adjusted private consumer and business spending
  • Real Final Sales Percent Change — annualized changes in private domestic demand

The PCE Price Index is particularly significant because it’s the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation measurement when evaluating progress toward its 2% target.

The latest BEA data also shows real U.S. GDP grew at a 1.5% annualized rate during the second quarter of 2026, compared with 2.1% during Q1.

Ten Blockchains Get Official U.S. Economic Data

The feeds are initially available across:

Ethereum, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base, Botanix, Linea, Mantle, Optimism, Sonic and ZKsync.

Additional blockchain networks could be supported depending on demand.

The data will follow the Bureau of Economic Analysis’ normal publication schedule, with feeds updating monthly or quarterly depending on the economic indicator.

That distinction is important.

Chainlink isn’t receiving economic numbers before Wall Street or the public. Instead, its oracle infrastructure takes officially released government data and makes it available in a format that blockchain applications can automatically read and use.

Smart Contracts Can Now React to Government Data

This is where putting economic data onchain becomes more than simply publishing government statistics on another platform.

Smart contracts can actually do something with the numbers.

A prediction market could automatically settle a contract asking whether U.S. GDP exceeded 2%.

An inflation-linked token could reference PCE data.

A DeFi protocol could theoretically adjust parameters after a major economic report.

Developers could also build:

Prediction markets, inflation-linked assets, perpetual futures, automated trading strategies, economic dashboards and DeFi risk-management systems.

Instead of a developer pulling numbers from a government website and manually feeding them into an application, Chainlink’s oracle network provides the data directly to the blockchain.

This Actually Started Under the Commerce Department in 2025

The initiative isn’t entirely new.

The Commerce Department first announced its push to bring BEA economic statistics onchain in August 2025, working with both Chainlink and Pyth Network.

The department also separately placed second-quarter 2025 GDP information across public networks including Bitcoin and Solana.

But there’s an important difference between those earlier blockchain records and Chainlink’s feeds.

Publishing a cryptographic hash on Bitcoin can provide proof that a government document hasn’t been altered.

A Chainlink Data Feed provides the actual numerical value in a standardized format that smart contracts can continuously reference and act upon.

That makes the latest implementation much more useful for automated financial applications.

Chainlink Is Becoming a Bridge Between Government Data and DeFi

The development adds another major use case to Chainlink’s oracle infrastructure.

The network already supplies price information and other external data to DeFi applications and increasingly supports tokenized financial products. Chainlink also provides infrastructure for tokenized stocks on Base, including assets tracking companies such as Nvidia, Apple, Meta and Alphabet.

Now that same infrastructure can deliver official U.S. macroeconomic statistics.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the government’s broader objective is to make American economic information globally accessible while supporting the country’s blockchain strategy.

The significance isn’t simply that GDP numbers are being stored on a blockchain.

It’s that blockchain applications can now use official U.S. government economic data as programmable financial infrastructure.

For years, DeFi has depended heavily on oracles to bring crypto prices onchain.

Now Chainlink is doing the same thing with America’s GDP and inflation numbers — giving smart contracts a direct connection to the U.S. economy.
