Taiwan News Anchor Indicted in Crypto-Funded Chinese Propaganda and Military Bribery Scandal

A major national security scandal has erupted in Taiwan after prosecutors indicted a Taiwanese news anchor accused of accepting cryptocy payments from China to produce pro-Beijing propaganda and allegedly help bribe military personnel for sensitive information. The case has quickly become one of Taiwan’s most explosive media and crypto-related investigations in recent years.

Prosecutors Accuse Anchor of Taking Crypto Payments From China

Taiwanese prosecutors indicted CTI News anchor Lin Chen-you, also known online as “Ma De,” on allegations that he accepted funding connected to Chinese government influence operations. Authorities claim Lin received payments to create political content favorable to Beijing while operating media programs inside Taiwan.

According to investigators, Chinese entities allegedly provided instructions, outlines, and political messaging topics for some broadcasts, while other content proposals were reportedly submitted to Chinese contacts for approval before production. Prosecutors claim Lin was paid varying amounts depending on the level of coordination involved in the programming. The case has intensified political tensions in Taiwan as concerns grow around Chinese influence campaigns targeting media, politics, and military institutions through covert financial operations.

USDT and Underground Transfers Allegedly Used

One of the most significant aspects of the investigation involves the alleged use of cryptocy to move funds. Prosecutors say portions of the payments were transferred using Tether’s USDT stablecoin alongside underground remittance systems designed to obscure the source of funds.

Investigators believe intermediaries converted USDT into Taiwanese dollars before distributing money to individuals allegedly involved in the operation. Authorities say the financial flows involved several million New Taiwan dollars and included both crypto transactions and informal banking channels.  The use of stablecoins in the case highlights how crypto assets are increasingly appearing in geopolitical influence operations and cross-border financial investigations due to their speed, global accessibility, and ability to move outside traditional banking systems.

Military Personnel Allegedly Targeted for Intelligence Gathering

Taiwanese authorities claim the operation expanded beyond media influence and into military infiltration efforts. Prosecutors allege that financially vulnerable active-duty and former military personnel were approached and offered payments in exchange for sensitive information and pro-China propaganda cooperation.

Reports indicate investigators uncovered allegations involving:

  • Drone operation information
  • Military intelligence leaks
  • Recruitment of soldiers
  • Propaganda video participation
  • Payments tied to classified information

Authorities allege some individuals received significant compensation for providing military-related materials, including information connected to Taiwan’s drone operations and defense infrastructure. Taiwanese prosecutors described the case as a serious threat to national security and said the investigation remains ongoing.

Multiple Defendants and Expanding Investigation

The indictment reportedly includes multiple current and former military personnel in addition to Lin Chen-you. Prosecutors are pursuing charges connected to national security violations, corruption, espionage-related activities, and illegal foreign influence operations.

Authorities say several suspects remain detained while investigators continue tracing funding sources, communication channels, and organizational structures tied to the alleged operation. Officials also indicated that additional arrests or indictments could still emerge as the investigation expands. Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party and other political figures have condemned the alleged activities, arguing that covert foreign-funded propaganda operations undermine Taiwan’s democratic institutions and press independence.

Crypto’s Growing Role in Geopolitical Operations

The scandal adds to a growing global trend where cryptocurrencies — particularly stablecoins like USDT — are increasingly appearing in investigations involving sanctions evasion, espionage financing, cybercrime, and geopolitical influence campaigns.

Stablecoins have become especially attractive for cross-border operations because they offer:

  • Fast international transfers
  • Dollar-denominated stability
  • Reduced reliance on banks
  • Easy global accessibility
  • Pseudonymous transaction flows

Governments and intelligence agencies worldwide are now paying closer attention to how blockchain-based financial systems may be used within covert operations and influence networks.
