A major national security scandal has erupted in Taiwan after prosecutors indicted a Taiwanese news anchor accused of accepting cryptocy payments from China to produce pro-Beijing propaganda and allegedly help bribe military personnel for sensitive information. Taiwanese prosecutors indicted CTI News anchor Lin Chen-you, also known online as “Ma De,” on allegations that he accepted funding connected to Chinese government influence operations. One of the most significant aspects of the investigation involves the alleged use of cryptocy to move funds. Prosecutors say portions of the payments were transferred using Tether’s USDT stablecoin alongside underground remittance systems designed to obscure the source of funds.
Investigators believe intermediaries converted USDT into Taiwanese dollars before distributing money to individuals allegedly involved in the operation. Authorities say the financial flows involved several million New Taiwan dollars and included both crypto transactions and informal banking channels. The use of stablecoins in the case highlights how crypto assets are increasingly appearing in geopolitical influence operations and cross-border financial investigations due to their speed, global accessibility, and ability to move outside traditional banking systems.
