Sony Patents PlayStation Controller That Could Turn Into a Tap-to-Pay Terminal

Sony is exploring a PlayStation controller that could double as a contactless payment terminal, allowing gamers to tap a smartphone, credit card or gift card directly against the controller to buy games and digital content. The newly published patent uses NFC and Bluetooth technology to make payments and account transfers easier without forcing players to manually enter long card numbers or redemption codes.

Sony Wants to Put Tap-to-Pay Inside the Controller

The patent application, titled “Video Game Controller-Driven Information Transfer,” was filed in March 2025 and published on September 17, 2026.

The system essentially turns a PlayStation controller into an intermediary between a payment device and the console.

Instead of entering payment information manually, a player could place a smartphone or compatible card near the controller. The controller receives the information and sends it to the PlayStation console to complete the payment-related request.

Potential uses described in the filing include:

  • Tapping a smartphone against the controller to purchase a game

  • Using a contactless payment card for PlayStation purchases

  • Tapping a gift card to add its balance to an account

  • Transferring player IDs and account information

  • Quickly adding guest players to multiplayer games

  • Sending screenshots and recordings between a console and smartphone

Your Controller Could Become the Checkout Terminal

One of the most interesting examples involves purchasing a game.

The console could display a request for payment information and ask the player to bring a phone close to the controller.

The controller would detect the device using NFC, Bluetooth or physical contact and could provide confirmation through a light, vibration or sound.

Payment information would then travel through the controller to the console for processing. A receipt could subsequently be sent back to the user’s phone.

Essentially, the PlayStation controller becomes the equivalent of the contactless terminal consumers already use at stores and restaurants.

Sony Could Make Gift Cards Much Easier

Another example could eliminate one of the more annoying parts of using gaming gift cards.

Instead of typing a long redemption code with a controller, Sony’s system could allow someone to tap or swipe a compatible gift card against the controller.

One patent illustration shows a $25 gift card being recognized by the system and added to the player’s account.

That same communication system could eventually support other forms of digital identity or payment information.

Buy a Game at an Event and Download It at Home

Sony also describes how the technology could work outside someone’s home.

Imagine playing a PlayStation demo at a gaming convention or retail store.

After finishing the demo, the screen could ask whether you want to purchase the game. Instead of logging into your PlayStation account on the demonstration console, you could tap your phone against its controller.

The purchase could then be associated with your account so the game is available to download when you return home.

That could make controllers part of a much broader system connecting physical gaming experiences, digital identities and online purchases.

This Isn’t a PlayStation Crypto Payment System

For Web3 users, it’s important not to read more into the patent than Sony actually disclosed.

The filing discusses NFC, phones, payment cards, gift cards and electronic payments. It doesn’t announce support for Bitcoin, stablecoins or other cryptocurrencies.

However, the underlying concept is interesting from a digital-payments perspective.

If a future PlayStation controller can securely communicate payment information from smartphones and digital wallets, Sony would have an additional interface through which new payment technologies could theoretically be integrated later.

For now, though, crypto isn’t part of the announced concept.

Don’t Expect a New Controller Just Yet

Patents frequently describe technologies that never reach consumers.

Sony hasn’t announced that this controller is being manufactured, nor has it confirmed the feature for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 6 or another future system.

The patent diagrams resemble the current PS5 DualSense controller, but that doesn’t establish which generation of hardware Sony might use if the technology becomes a commercial product.

The filing should therefore be viewed as Sony protecting and exploring an idea rather than announcing a new PlayStation accessory.

Gaming Controllers Could Become Payment Devices

The bigger story is how gaming hardware continues evolving beyond simply controlling games.

Controllers already include microphones, speakers, motion sensors, touchpads and advanced haptic feedback. Adding NFC could turn the device into another bridge connecting payments, digital identities, smartphones and gaming accounts.

For Sony, reducing the friction between deciding to buy something and actually completing that purchase could be particularly valuable inside the PlayStation Store and games containing downloadable content.

Sony hasn’t announced a tap-to-pay PlayStation controller yet, but the patent shows where gaming payments could be headed. If the technology eventually reaches consumers, buying a game could become as simple as tapping a phone or card against the controller already sitting in your hands.
