Pudgy Penguins Shuts Down NFT Game Pudgy Party Less Than a Year After Launch

Pudgy Penguins has officially shut down Pudgy Party, its mobile battle royale game developed alongside Mythical Games, less than a year after its highly anticipated launch. The decision marks one of the most significant Web3 gaming shutdowns of 2026 and highlights the ongoing challenges facing blockchain-based gaming despite strong brand recognition and millions of users.

The game launched globally in August 2025 and quickly gained traction, surpassing 1 million downloads, reaching the top of mobile app charts, and even earning recognition within the gaming industry. However, despite early momentum, the Pudgy Penguins team announced that it would discontinue the game and redirect all resources toward Pudgy World, a browser-based experience that will now serve as the flagship gaming product for the Pudgy ecosystem.

From One Million Downloads to Shutdown

At launch, Pudgy Party appeared to have all the ingredients for success. The game combined the popular obstacle-course gameplay style made famous by titles like Fall Guys with Pudgy Penguins branding, NFT integrations, and support from Mythical Games, one of the most recognized studios in the Web3 gaming sector. The project was heavily marketed, including advertising campaigns in Times Square, and quickly attracted over one million downloads across iOS and Android devices.

Despite those impressive numbers, long-term engagement reportedly failed to meet expectations. According to reports from community discussions, daily active users had fallen dramatically in the months leading up to the shutdown, making it difficult to justify continued investment in the game. CEO Luca Netz reportedly acknowledged that the company had lost millions of dollars attempting to keep the project running.

The decision ultimately came down to resource allocation, with leadership concluding that the company’s future would be better served by focusing on Pudgy World rather than continuing to support two separate gaming products.

Pudgy World Becomes the New Flagship

The closure of Pudgy Party is not a retreat from gaming altogether. Instead, Pudgy Penguins is making a strategic pivot toward Pudgy World, a browser-based virtual experience launched earlier this year.

Unlike Pudgy Party, which was developed in partnership with Mythical Games, Pudgy World is fully controlled by the Pudgy Penguins team. This gives the company complete ownership over development, product direction, and monetization strategies. According to the project’s official statement, Pudgy World already delivers stronger engagement and is better positioned to serve as the long-term foundation of the Pudgy ecosystem.

The browser-based format also removes many of the barriers associated with mobile gaming, allowing users to participate without downloading a dedicated app. Pudgy Penguins believes this approach will make it easier to onboard mainstream audiences while supporting the brand’s broader expansion into toys, entertainment, licensing, and digital experiences.

NFT Holders Want Answers

While the shutdown itself surprised many players, one of the biggest concerns has centered around NFT ownership and in-game purchases.

Pudgy Party allowed players to acquire tokenized in-game items and digital collectibles. Following the shutdown announcement, many community members questioned what would happen to those assets. As of the announcement, the company had not publicly outlined a comprehensive migration plan, refund policy, or method for transferring purchased items into Pudgy World.

This has sparked criticism from portions of the Web3 gaming community, where ownership of digital assets is often promoted as one of blockchain gaming’s primary advantages. Some players argue that shutting down a game without immediately addressing NFT utility creates uncertainty about the long-term value of digital ownership. The company has encouraged users to monitor official channels for future updates regarding collectibles and player assets.

Another Casualty in Web3 Gaming

Pudgy Party’s closure follows a growing list of Web3 gaming projects that have either scaled back operations or shut down entirely over the past two years. Industry-wide challenges including player retention, monetization difficulties, rising development costs, and reduced NFT market activity have forced many studios to reevaluate their strategies.

Even projects with strong communities and recognizable brands have struggled to convert initial interest into sustainable long-term businesses. The broader NFT market remains significantly below its 2021 and 2022 highs, creating additional pressure on projects that rely heavily on digital collectibles and tokenized economies.  For many observers, the Pudgy Party shutdown reinforces a growing industry realization that strong branding and NFT integration alone are not enough to guarantee success in gaming.
