Pixelmon is officially ending game development and laying off its gaming team after an external publisher test failed to produce results strong enough to justify continuing. The NFT project, which became infamous after raising roughly $70 million from its 2022 mint, spent years attempting to rebuild its reputation and turn its collectible creatures into a functioning Web3 gaming franchise. Now, the remaining Pixelmon team will explore entirely new business models outside gaming.
Publisher Test Becomes Pixelmon’s Final Shot
Pixelmon spent three weeks allowing outside publishers to market its games using their own budgets while analyzing player acquisition and retention.
The publishers didn’t completely reject the games. Instead, they recommended additional improvements followed by another round of testing.
Pixelmon’s leadership decided against continuing, saying the project had remained in a “not good enough” position for more than two years and that the publisher test had already been designated internally as its final attempt to prove the gaming business could work.
Entire Gaming Team Is Being Cut
Pixelmon has given notice to its entire gaming team, with affected employees receiving severance and benefits based on requirements in their respective jurisdictions.
Development will stop across Pixelmon’s existing game portfolio, which at various points included:
- PixelPals
- Hunting Grounds
- Arena
- Kevin the Adventurer
- Warriors of Nova Thera
A smaller group of senior and multidisciplinary employees will remain while the company searches for another direction.
Pixelmon Is Looking Beyond Gaming
The surviving team is now considering non-gaming business models, including opportunities involving AI.
Pixelmon previously experimented with projects including Launchpool, CollectShiny and Lexium, but none provided the sustainable business model management was looking for.
The company says returning remaining funds directly to the community isn’t an option because Pixelmon has shareholders and financial investors. Remaining non-tax escrowed funds will instead be used to search for a business model with product-market fit. If that effort fails, Pixelmon says the company could ultimately shut down.
Pixelmon Raised $8 Million to Rebuild
The shutdown comes roughly two years after Pixelmon raised another $8 million in seed funding from investors including Animoca Brands, Delphi Ventures, Foresight Ventures, Amber Group, Bing Ventures, Bitscale Capital and Cypher Capital.
That capital was intended to help transform Pixelmon into a decentralized gaming and entertainment franchise built around its NFT intellectual property.
From $70 Million NFT Mint to No Games
Pixelmon’s history stretches back to one of the NFT boom’s most notorious launches.
The project generated approximately $70 million from its February 2022 NFT mint, with buyers paying as much as 3 ETH for NFTs tied to an upcoming Ethereum play-to-earn game.
The artwork reveal quickly became controversial when the finished 3D characters looked dramatically different from the concept art used to market the project. Pixelmon later changed leadership, redesigned its artwork and spent years attempting to rebuild the brand.
Those efforts kept Pixelmon alive long after many NFT projects from the 2021–2022 cycle disappeared, but they weren’t enough to establish a sustainable gaming business.
Pixelmon Isn’t Dead Yet
Ending game development doesn’t necessarily mean Pixelmon itself is shutting down.
The remaining team plans to reveal more about its potential business pivots, AI initiatives and future relationship with the Pixelmon community during an upcoming town hall.
Pixelmon’s next chapter will therefore look very different from the vision that originally raised tens of millions of dollars from NFT collectors. After four years of attempting to turn its digital creatures into a successful gaming franchise, the project is now searching for a reason to exist beyond games.
