OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is working on a new AI model named “Strawberry” that aims to make artificial intelligence think more like humans do. According to a Reuters report on July 12, Strawberry is designed to do deep research on its own by searching the internet. This could help solve complicated real-world problems on a large scale.
An OpenAI spokesperson explained, “We want our AI models to see and understand the world more like we do. Continuous research into new AI capabilities is a common practice in the industry, with a shared belief that these systems will improve in reasoning over time.”
The Strawberry project involves extensive “post-training” analysis of OpenAI’s existing AI models to generate more human-like responses. This aligns with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s January 2024 statement that “The most important areas of progress will be around reasoning ability.”
While still in development, the timeline for Strawberry’s public availability remains unclear. Reuters reports that the model’s operational details are closely guarded, even within OpenAI.
Strawberry builds upon OpenAI’s Q* project announced in November 2023, which was described by industry experts as a technical breakthrough enabling the development of more powerful AI models. This news comes amid changes at OpenAI, such as reports of Microsoft and Apple leaving the company’s board. OpenAI has also started working with Los Alamos National Laboratory on using AI in bioscience research.
