Dogecoin is getting a major utility upgrade as DogeOS launches a public testnet designed to bring Ethereum-compatible smart contracts, DeFi, stablecoins, prediction markets and blockchain games to the DOGE ecosystem. The zero-knowledge rollup uses DOGE for transaction fees while allowing developers to build applications without changing Dogecoin’s underlying blockchain.
DogeOS launched its public Chikyū testnet on September 30, giving developers an application layer specifically designed for the Dogecoin ecosystem.
The network operates as an EVM-compatible zero-knowledge rollup, meaning developers familiar with Ethereum can use many of the same programming languages and development tools to create applications for Dogecoin.
DOGE serves as the native cy for transaction fees, potentially creating another use case for the cryptocy beyond payments, tipping and trading.
Developers can build applications involving:
DogeOS isn’t turning the Dogecoin base layer itself into an Ethereum-style smart-contract blockchain.
Instead, applications execute through the DogeOS rollup, with the network designed to settle its state back to Dogecoin.
This approach allows Dogecoin’s relatively simple base-layer design to remain intact while developers gain access to a separate programmable environment.
There is an important limitation to the current architecture.
Dogecoin does not currently verify DogeOS’s zero-knowledge proofs directly.
DogeOS currently relies on a combination of:
The DogeOS team proposed an upgrade to Dogecoin Core in July 2025 that would allow Dogecoin miners to verify ZK execution proofs directly.
That upgrade has not been implemented, meaning DogeOS hasn’t yet reached the more trust-minimized architecture envisioned for the project.
Several projects are already developing applications for the testnet.
Barkswap is building a liquidity engine, while Superposition Finance is developing a Dogecoin lending protocol. Derpsis working on perpetual futures, and USDoge is developing a collateralized stablecoin.
Other projects include Snag for prediction markets, Anoncoin and Starbase for token launches and Doge Escape, PlaysOut and DogeFundMe for gaming and consumer applications.
DogeOS comes from the team behind the MyDoge wallet and raised $6.9 million in May 2025 in a funding round led by Polychain Capital.
The broader goal is to transform Dogecoin from primarily a cryptocy asset and payment network into an ecosystem where developers can build financial and consumer applications.
Dogecoin Foundation director Timothy Stebbing said he hopes DogeOS can become a springboard for a new generation of startups building around Dogecoin.
For now, DogeOS remains a public testnet, meaning developers are testing applications and the underlying infrastructure before a full mainnet deployment.
CEO Jordan Jefferson said the team will announce its mainnet timeline as additional development milestones are reached.
If the project eventually moves successfully to mainnet, DogeOS could significantly expand what people can actually do with DOGE, giving the memecoin ecosystem infrastructure for DeFi, stablecoins, trading, prediction markets and gaming while keeping Dogecoin’s original base layer largely unchanged.
