Coinbase Gives AI Agents Their Own Wallets to Trade Crypto Autonomously

Coinbase is pushing deeper into the AI economy with Agentic Wallets, infrastructure designed specifically to give autonomous AI agents the ability to hold money, trade crypto, earn yield and make payments without requiring human approval for every transaction. The wallets operate with programmable spending limits and security controls while allowing AI agents to trade tokens on Base without paying gas fees.

Coinbase Gives AI Agents Their Own Crypto Wallets

Coinbase introduced Agentic Wallets through its Coinbase Developer Platform as infrastructure built specifically for autonomous AI agents.

Unlike a traditional crypto wallet designed primarily for a person, Agentic Wallets allow software agents to independently perform financial actions after a user or developer establishes the rules governing what they’re allowed to do.

Agents can be equipped with pre-built capabilities including:

  • Fund wallets
  • Send crypto
  • Trade tokens
  • Earn yield
  • Authenticate transactions

Coinbase says an agent can be configured and given wallet capabilities in under two minutes.

AI Agents Can Trade Crypto 24/7

One of the biggest applications is autonomous DeFi.

Developers can create agents capable of continuously monitoring crypto markets, searching for yield opportunities and executing transactions based on predetermined strategies.

For example, an agent could monitor several positions overnight and automatically rebalance a portfolio when certain conditions are met, rather than waiting for its owner to manually approve each transaction.

Coinbase says Agentic Wallets support gasless trading for tokens on Base, allowing agents to continue operating without stopping because their wallet lacks ETH for network fees.

Spending Limits Keep Agents From Having Unlimited Access

Giving an autonomous AI access to money creates obvious security risks, so Coinbase has built programmable restrictions directly into the wallet infrastructure.

Users and developers can establish:

  • Maximum spending per session
  • Maximum individual transaction amounts
  • Restrictions on what the agent can access
  • Know Your Transaction screening
  • Isolated wallet environments

Private keys are also isolated from the AI model itself.

Coinbase says wallet keys remain inside its secure infrastructure and aren’t exposed through the agent’s prompt or large language model, reducing the possibility that a prompt-injection attack could directly reveal private keys.

x402 Lets AI Agents Pay Other Machines

Agentic Wallets also integrate x402, Coinbase’s open payment protocol designed for machine-to-machine transactions.

Coinbase says x402 has already processed more than 50 million transactions.

Instead of encountering a conventional checkout screen, an AI agent can use x402 to automatically pay for resources it needs, including:

  • API access
  • AI models
  • Computing resources
  • Premium data
  • Digital services
  • Storage

That could eventually allow an autonomous agent to generate revenue, pay for the resources needed to continue operating and manage its own expenses with limited human intervention.

Coinbase Is Building Multiple Types of AI Trading Agents

Agentic Wallets are only one piece of Coinbase’s expanding AI financial infrastructure.

The company now has several related products that serve different purposes.

Coinbase for Agents connects an AI assistant directly to a user’s existing Coinbase account, allowing the agent to trade and perform approved financial tasks on the user’s behalf.

Coinbase Advisor provides AI-powered investment guidance directly inside the Coinbase application.

Agentic Wallets, meanwhile, are developer infrastructure that gives an autonomous agent its own wallet and financial capabilities.

That distinction is important. An Agentic Wallet isn’t simply an AI bot receiving permission to click the trade button on someone’s Coinbase account. It gives the agent its own programmable financial infrastructure.

Coinbase for Agents Has Already Expanded Beyond Crypto

Coinbase’s broader agent strategy is also moving beyond cryptocy.

In September, the company expanded Coinbase for Agents to allow agents to trade stocks and ETFs, alongside its existing crypto and derivatives capabilities.

Agents can also use x402 micropayments to purchase external data or access AI models before making a decision.

That creates a workflow where an agent could potentially:

Monitor a market → detect a predefined condition → purchase additional data → analyze the information → execute a trade.

The entire sequence can occur within limits established by the user.

Coinbase Is Building Financial Infrastructure for the AI Economy

Coinbase began moving toward autonomous crypto infrastructure with AgentKit in 2024, followed by the development of x402 and eventually Coinbase for Agents and Agentic Wallets.

The strategy reflects a larger shift taking place across AI and finance.

Today’s AI assistants primarily answer questions and recommend actions. Agentic systems are being designed to actually execute those actions.

Giving an AI agent a wallet means it can potentially trade assets, purchase data, pay for computing resources, collect revenue and interact financially with other autonomous agents.

Coinbase is betting that crypto’s programmable payment infrastructure will become one of the financial foundations of that emerging machine economy.

The major challenge will be balancing that autonomy with security. As agents receive greater authority to control real money, spending limits, transaction monitoring, private-key isolation and clearly defined permissions become just as important as the intelligence of the AI making the decisions.
