Amazon and MGM Studio is gearing up to bring the captivating story of Heather “Razzlekhan” Morgan and her husband Ilya Lichtenstein to the big screen. The couple made headlines in 2022 when they were charged with conspiracy by the U.S. Department of Justice for their alleged involvement in a $4 billion cryptocurrency heist and money laundering scheme.
The upcoming Amazon film, still without an official title, is set to be directed by Hannah Marks, known for her work on “Don’t Make Me Go,” who also took charge of penning the script. Adding star power to the production, Lili Reinhart, a former cast member of “Riverdale,” is co-producing the Amazon movie.
The screenplay draws inspiration from a 2022 New York Times article, and the publication actively contributes to the production through its partnership with Anonymous Content. The core narrative of the Amazon film revolves around the exploits of Morgan and Lichtenstein, who confessed to orchestrating the 2016 hack of the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange.
Their arrest in 2022 brought to light their elaborate attempts to maintain digital anonymity as they laundered stolen funds through a complex web of cryptocurrency transactions. Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco underscored the meticulous work of law enforcement in tracking the money, regardless of its digital form.
Before facing legal troubles, Morgan led a multifaceted career. She wasn’t just an aspiring rapper using the moniker “Razzlekahn” but also contributed to Forbes and worked in the cybersecurity field. The couple, having admitted to stealing 120,900 Bitcoin valued at around $3.6 billion at the time, appeared before a judge in Washington, D.C. last summer.
While agreeing to forfeit their ill-gotten gains, they could potentially face up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted. A significant development unfolded in August 2023 when the Justice Department announced the recovery of an additional $475 million linked to the cryptocurrency heist. Morgan, once immersed in the cryptocurrency and NFT space, has distanced herself from it since her arrest.
