OpenAI is reportedly developing a new social networking platform designed to be free of bots and fake accounts by requiring users to prove they’re real human beings — with early discussions pointing to biometric verification technologies such as iris-scanning devices or Face ID. The idea is to ensure that each account corresponds to a unique person rather than automated or AI-generated “bot” profiles that plague existing platforms like X (formerly Twitter) or TikTok.
According to sources familiar with the effort, the project is still in early stages of development and is being built by a small internal team at OpenAI. To authenticate users, the company is considering multiple biometric options, including Apple’s Face ID system and the Orb eye-scanning device developed by Tools for Humanity — a company co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman that underpins the World blockchain’s “proof-of-personhood” identity system.
The Orb device captures a scan of a user’s iris pattern to generate a unique cryptographic identifier that proves a person is human without storing the raw biometric image on central servers. This kind of “proof of personhood” has already been used in the World network to help verify millions of users around the globe.
OpenAI’s reported goal is to tackle the bot-account problem head-on by giving users a way to join and interact without spam, fake profiles or AI-driven accounts — a challenge many major social platforms struggle with today. However, privacy advocates have raised concerns that widespread biometric authentication, especially involving iris data, could present long-term privacy and security risks if such sensitive data were misused or compromised.
At this stage, OpenAI has not provided a public launch timeline or official product details, and plans could evolve as development continues. Still, the concept suggests a bold approach to identity verification and online interaction that could reshape how social networks think about authenticity and human engagement in the age of AI.
