Pitbull didn’t launch a cryptocurrency, but crypto traders did it for him anyway. The global music star’s upcoming album, titled Pitcoin, triggered a wave of unofficial PITCOIN memecoins after promotional artwork featuring a gold coin convinced some fans that “Mr. Worldwide” was entering crypto.
Within hours, multiple PITCOIN tokens appeared across Solana, with the leading version more than doubling in value and attracting over $600,000 in daily trading volume. There is one important detail for traders: none of the tokens are officially connected to Pitbull.
Pitbull’s Album Announcement Looked a Lot Like a Crypto Launch
Pitbull, whose real name is Armando Christian Pérez, first revealed Pitcoin as the title of his upcoming 14th studio album through a Billboard exclusive on August 12. The album is expected in early October.
Things became more confusing when Pitbull promoted the project on social media using artwork featuring gold coins stamped with “PITCOIN” and his likeness.
The post was directing fans to pre-save the album on streaming services, but the crypto-inspired branding immediately caused people to ask whether Pitbull was launching a token.
Crypto traders didn’t wait for an answer.
PITCOIN Tokens Appear on Solana
Several unrelated tokens carrying the PITCOIN name quickly appeared on Solana-based memecoin platforms including Pump.fun and PumpSwap.
At the height of the initial speculation:
- The leading PITCOIN climbed more than 100% in one day
- Market capitalization reached roughly $240,000–$260,000
- 24-hour trading volume exceeded $600,000
- Another PITCOIN version surged more than 200% within seven hours
- Dozens of smaller copycats appeared using similar names and branding
One of the leading Solana tokens was actually created on August 12, the same day Billboard first revealed the album’s name, suggesting memecoin creators moved almost immediately after the announcement.
Pitbull Has Nothing to Do With These Tokens
Despite the branding, Pitbull hasn’t launched or endorsed a PITCOIN cryptocurrency.
Neither Pitbull nor his label Mr. 305 Records has publicly connected itself to any of the tokens currently trading under the name.
The distinction is particularly important because anyone can create a memecoin using a celebrity’s name, image or cultural moment without that person’s involvement.
In this case:
Pitcoin album = official.
PITCOIN crypto tokens = unofficial.
Some fans initially thought Pitbull’s account had been hacked, while others warned that the token could become another celebrity-related rug pull before realizing the post was promoting music rather than cryptocurrency.
Celebrity Memecoins Have Trained Crypto Traders to React Fast
The confusion makes more sense considering what has happened across crypto over the past several years.
Celebrity-linked tokens involving names such as Iggy Azalea, Caitlyn Jenner, Jason Derulo and Donald Trump have conditioned memecoin traders to react quickly whenever a famous person suddenly posts something resembling a crypto announcement.
Pitbull didn’t even need to launch one.
The combination of a recognizable celebrity, the word “coin,” gold-token artwork and a viral social media post was enough for speculators to create an entire market around it.
The episode demonstrates just how quickly pop culture can become a tradable crypto narrative.
Pitbull announced an album. Memecoin traders saw a ticker symbol.
And within hours, hundreds of thousands of dollars were trading through cryptocurrencies the artist never created
