MetaMask Launchs Self-Custodial AI Wallet for Autonomous Crypto Trading

MetaMask has officially launched Agent Wallet, a self-custodial wallet that allows AI agents to autonomously execute on-chain trades while keeping users in full control of their funds. The new wallet enables AI-powered trading across decentralized finance (DeFi), allowing autonomous software to monitor markets, identify opportunities, and execute transactions within user-defined limits instead of giving AI unrestricted access to crypto assets. The launch marks MetaMask’s biggest step yet into the rapidly growing intersection of artificial intelligence and Web3 finance.

Unlike traditional crypto wallets, Agent Wallet is designed specifically for autonomous AI. Users can configure spending limits, allow approved protocols, choose risk settings, and determine how much authority an AI agent has before it begins trading. Every supported transaction is automatically screened through MetaMask’s security pipeline, which includes transaction simulation, threat scanning, and MEV protection to reduce the risks associated with autonomous financial decision-making.

AI Agents Can Trade Without Giving Up Self-Custody

MetaMask built Agent Wallet around one core principle: users should never sacrifice self-custody to benefit from AI automation.

Instead of handing over wallet keys, users define the rules that AI agents must follow, including:

  • Daily spending limits.
  • Approved DeFi protocols.
  • Risk preferences.
  • Human approval requirements.
  • Wallet security settings.

This allows AI agents to react instantly to market opportunities while remaining constrained by rules established by the wallet owner.

Supports Multiple AI Frameworks

Agent Wallet is compatible with several leading AI development platforms, including:

  • Claude Code.
  • Codex.
  • Cursor.
  • OpenClaw.
  • Hermes.
  • OpenCode.

The wallet also supports Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) networks and Hyperliquid, enabling AI agents to interact with swaps, perpetual futures, liquidity pools, and prediction markets across multiple blockchain ecosystems.

Security Is Built Into Every Transaction

MetaMask says security—not automation—is the product’s primary differentiator.

Every supported transaction passes through multiple layers of protection, including:

  • Transaction simulation.
  • Threat scanning powered by Blockaid.
  • Smart transaction MEV protection.
  • User-defined permissions.

Eligible transactions that successfully pass MetaMask’s security checks are also covered under the company’s Transaction Protection program, which provides up to $10,000 per month in protection against qualifying losses.

No Native Gas Token Required

One of Agent Wallet’s most notable features is gas abstraction.

Instead of requiring AI agents to maintain separate balances of each blockchain’s native token, MetaMask automatically settles supported network fees using the asset being transferred. This simplifies autonomous trading by allowing AI agents to complete transactions without first acquiring native gas tokens for every supported network.

The AI Agent Economy Continues Expanding

The launch follows a wave of infrastructure announcements supporting autonomous AI finance.

Over the past several months:

  • Cloudflare introduced programmable stablecoin wallets for AI agents.
  • MoonPay expanded AI payment capabilities.
  • Coinbase continued developing agentic wallet infrastructure.
  • MetaMask has now launched a production-ready self-custodial AI wallet.

Together, these developments suggest the industry is rapidly building the financial infrastructure needed for autonomous software agents to participate directly in blockchain ecosystems.
