One of the most popular football teams in the world, Manchester United, recently announced the launch of ‘Player Trading Cards for Fantasy United’ — a new Web3 fantasy soccer game on the Tezos blockchain.
Fans can begin collecting and trading the unique, hand-drawn digital trading cards for the upcoming 2024-2025 season now. The first game will kick off on August 16th at the team’s opener against Fulham.
The cards feature players from the men’s first-team squad in three editions: Classic, Rare, and Ultra-Rare. Player packs contain seven cards for the price of for £3, or around $4. Individual cards can be bought and sold on Objkt, Tezos’ NFT marketplace.
The NFTs are dynamic, meaning they will be updated with real-time stats including goals, assists, saves, and tackles throughout the season. Fans can collect cards to create their own five-man team and participate in mini-leagues to earn in-game points in Fantasy United.
The initiative is part of an ongoing collaboration between Manchester United and Tezos, which launched in 2022 with ‘The Devils’ NFT collection. According to Manchester United’s press release, over 750K NFT collectibles were claimed at men and women’s home games since the 2023/2024 season, and its growing Web3 community has over 100,000 Discord members.
Manchester United’s director of Digital Innovation, Ronan Joyce, said the Player Trading Cards will let fans “collect the whole men’s first team squad” and compete against their “mates all year long.”
