Ledger Unveils $899 Atom Crypto Smartphone With AI Features Following $93 Million Wallet Security Scandal

French cryptocy hardware wallet manufacturer Ledger has unveiled the Ledger Atom, an Android-powered device that combines smartphone functionality with advanced cryptocy security.Scheduled for release in summer 2027, the device will allow users to run popular applications, manage digital assets, communicate through encrypted messaging and approve AI-assisted transactions. The announcement comes as Ledger faces scrutiny over a major supply-chain attack involving tampered hardware wallets and an estimated $93.2 million in cryptocy losses.

Ledger Atom Combines a Smartphone With a Crypto Hardware Wallet

The Ledger Atom represents a major departure from the company’s traditional hardware wallets, which are primarily designed for securely storing cryptocy private keys.

Instead of a small USB-style device, Atom features a smartphone-sized touchscreen and runs Android alongside Ledger’s proprietary security operating system.

Users will be able to install everyday applications, including WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok, while switching to a separate protected environment to manage digital assets.

However, Ledger says Atom is not intended to replace a traditional smartphone. Its cellular connectivity supports data rather than conventional voice calls or SMS messaging.

The device is designed to work alongside a user’s existing phone while providing a more secure environment for cryptocy transactions.

Ledger Atom Features a 6.77-Inch Screen and Built-In Security

Ledger is positioning Atom as a premium cryptocy security device rather than a conventional mobile phone.

Its announced specifications include:

  • 6.77-inch OLED display with a 60Hz refresh rate.

  • Qualcomm Dragonwing processor running Android.

  • Separate Secure Element running Ledger OS.

  • 4,000mAh replaceable battery.

  • Physical privacy switch that disconnects the camera and microphone.

  • Five years of Android operating system updates.

  • At least seven years of replacement-parts support.

The device also features a rear camera and encrypted messaging capabilities.

By separating Android from Ledger’s secure operating environment, the company aims to allow users to access familiar applications without giving those apps direct access to sensitive cryptocy credentials.

Ledger Adds AI Agent Support Through OpenClaw

One of Atom’s more notable features is its planned integration with OpenClaw, an AI assistant platform.

Ledger envisions users delegating certain financial activities to AI agents while retaining direct control over transaction authorization.

For example, an AI assistant could help prepare a payment or manage a financial workflow without receiving unrestricted access to the user’s cryptocy wallet.

Users would still need to physically approve transactions through Ledger’s protected security environment.

This approach is intended to combine the convenience of AI automation with the protections of hardware-based transaction signing.

The integration reflects growing interest in agentic finance, where AI systems perform financial tasks on behalf of users while operating within defined security boundaries.

Ledger Introduces New Anti-Tampering Technology

The Atom announcement follows a major security incident involving Ledger hardware wallets distributed through third-party resellers.

Investigators discovered that attackers had physically modified some devices with hidden electronic components capable of capturing users’ 24-word recovery phrases during wallet setup.

Onchain researchers estimated losses of up to $93.2 million across more than 300 wallets, although Ledger has not independently verified the full amount.

The company says Atom incorporates additional safeguards specifically designed to address this type of supply-chain attack.

These protections include:

  • Protective security enclosure: Shields critical internal components from unauthorized physical access.

  • Display and back-cover sensors: Detect attempts to open or modify the device.

  • Independent tamper-detection power: Allows certain security protections to operate even when Atom is switched off.

  • Tamper-evident packaging: Helps customers identify signs that a device may have been opened before delivery.

Ledger says the protective enclosure is designed to prevent the type of screen-reading implant discovered in the recent attack.

However, the effectiveness of these protections against future attacks has not yet been independently established.

Ledger Limits Atom Sales to Its Official Website

The recent security incident also prompted Ledger to reconsider how its products reach customers.

The company plans to initially sell Atom exclusively through its official website, avoiding third-party retailers and distributors.

The decision is intended to reduce opportunities for devices to be intercepted or modified during distribution.

Ledger also confirmed that it currently has no plans to offer a trade-in program for customers affected by the recent hardware wallet incident, although future upgrade promotions remain possible.

Atom will be manufactured at Ledger’s facility in Vietnam, where the company already produces some of its more complex hardware devices.

Ledger Atom Will Cost Up to $899

Ledger has opened reservations for the upcoming device ahead of its planned summer 2027 release.

The announced pricing includes:

  • $100 refundable reservation deposit for the Founder’s Edition.

  • $849 Founder’s Edition price.

  • $899 expected retail price following the initial launch.

  • Summer 2027: Planned availability.

The price positions Atom well above Ledger’s traditional hardware wallets.

Rather than competing directly with inexpensive cryptocy storage devices, Ledger appears to be targeting users who want a dedicated platform for digital asset management, secure communication and AI-assisted financial activity.

Ledger Enters the Crypto Smartphone Market

Ledger is not the first company to combine smartphone technology with cryptocy security.

Solana Mobile introduced its Saga smartphone in 2023, followed by the Seeker in 2025.

Both devices incorporate security features intended to protect cryptocy private keys while providing access to blockchain applications.

Ledger is approaching the market differently.

Instead of adding cryptocy security to a conventional smartphone, the company is expanding a hardware wallet into a smartphone-like device.

That distinction reflects Ledger’s emphasis on protecting digital assets rather than competing with major smartphone manufacturers on cameras, entertainment or general-purpose mobile performance.

Ledger Bets on a New Generation of Secure Crypto Devices

The Atom announcement comes at a challenging time for Ledger.

The company’s reputation for cryptocy security has faced renewed scrutiny following the discovery of physically modified wallets in its reseller network.

At the same time, the cryptocy industry is moving toward more sophisticated applications involving decentralized finance, digital payments, tokenized assets and AI-powered financial services.

Atom represents Ledger’s attempt to bring those activities into a dedicated security-focused device.

Its combination of Android applications, hardware-protected cryptocy management and AI-assisted transaction approvals could appeal to users seeking greater control over their digital assets.
