Immutable, an Ethereum gaming platform, announced plans this week to consolidate its networks by merging the original Immutable X network into its newer Immutable zkEVM layer-2 blockchain. The merger, which is currently expected in late 2025, aims to unify the company’s gaming ecosystem after substantial growth in its zkEVM network, which has processed nearly 150 million transactions since launching in early 2024.
“By consolidating hundreds of millions of dollars in assets across hundreds of games onto one unified chain, we have the opportunity to create the true home of Web3 gaming for the millions of Immutable players,” the company wrote in a post. For users, the transition will be largely automatic. Users of the Immutable Passport wallet will see their assets automatically available on Immutable zkEVM, while users of other wallets like MetaMask will have assets transferred to their primary wallet. The company is offering an opt-out option for users who do not want their assets migrated automatically.
Game developers face more significant adjustments. The existing Immutable X APIs will be deprecated, requiring developers to reimplement certain mechanics. While asset contracts will be automatically deployed with the same ownership structure, collection addresses will change, and the company will provide an API for mapping these changes.
The Immutable-published game Guild of Guardians already completed such a migration, with the firm noting that it’s one of several games that “pioneered this upgrade.” Other notable games on the Immutable platform include Gods Unchained, Illuvium, RavenQues
