FRIEND Explodes 1,350% After Machi Big Brother Makes $1 Million Bet to Bring Friend.tech Back

FRIEND came roaring back from the dead after crypto trader Jeffrey Huang, better known as Machi Big Brother, offered $1 million to acquire and revive Friend.tech. The announcement sent the nearly abandoned SocialFi token soaring more than 1,350% in 24 hours as traders rushed back into the project.

Huang wants to turn Friend.tech into a community-led project and potentially relaunch it with new real-world asset features. But there’s an important catch: no acquisition has been agreed to, and Friend.tech’s original smart contracts can’t simply be taken over.

Machi Offers $1 Million for Friend.tech

On August 27, Huang publicly offered $1 million to acquire Friend.tech from pseudonymous co-founder Racer and early investor Paradigm.

At the time, FRIEND’s market capitalization had fallen below $300,000.

Huang proposed a community takeover, or CTO, using the existing FRIEND token on Base. He also floated the possibility of relaunching Friend.tech with users or social profiles backed by real-world assets, or RWAs

The announcement immediately sent traders scrambling into FRIEND.

At one point:

  • FRIEND surged more than 1,350% in 24 hours
  • The token traded around $0.0398 when Crypto Times reported the move
  • Market capitalization climbed above $640,000 at that snapshot
  • 24-hour trading volume reached approximately $1.41 million
  • Trading volume was more than twice the token’s market cap

Other intraday data showed an even more extreme move, with FRIEND briefly jumping from roughly $0.0031 to $0.0878 in about an hour before rapidly giving back much of the rally.

Machi Already Lost Millions Betting on FRIEND

Huang isn’t simply a trader discovering Friend.tech again.

He’s one of FRIEND’s most notable whales.

In 2024, Huang reportedly spent approximately 5,200 ETH worth $16.7 million acquiring around 11 million FRIEND tokens as the project collapsed. By September 2024, that position had fallen to roughly $700,000.

Onchain tracking cited by Crypto Times shows those 11 million FRIEND tokens were moved to a new wallet just days before Huang announced his $1 million takeover proposal.

That history makes his latest proposal particularly interesting.

Huang isn’t merely trying to resurrect an abandoned SocialFi platform. Reviving Friend.tech could also revive the value of one of his largest failed crypto bets.

There’s One Big Problem With Buying Friend.tech

Even if Racer and Paradigm accepted Huang’s proposal, the original Friend.tech protocol can’t simply be handed over.

In September 2024, the development team transferred ownership of its smart contracts to the blockchain’s zero address, permanently giving up administrative control.

That means a new owner can’t simply modify the original contracts or redirect their fees.

Huang later clarified that what he really wants is control of Friend.tech’s X account and website domain, which could be used to build a community revival around the existing FRIEND token.

Friend.tech’s original contracts would remain unchanged.

Friend.tech Was Once One of Base’s Biggest Apps

It’s easy to forget how big Friend.tech became during its 2023 peak.

The SocialFi platform allowed users to purchase “keys” connected to individual creators, providing access to private chats while generating trading fees.

At its height:

  • Friend.tech reached approximately 74,000 daily active users
  • Daily fees peaked around $2.27 million
  • The protocol generated roughly $64.3 million in lifetime fees
  • Friend.tech became one of Base’s earliest breakout applications

But activity collapsed before and after the FRIEND token launched in May 2024.

By August 2026, the platform was practically dormant, generating just $155 in fees during the first 26 days of the month before Huang’s announcement suddenly brought traders back.

FRIEND’s Rally Is Built on a Proposal, Not a Deal

The 1,350% rally demonstrates how quickly speculation can return to an abandoned crypto project.

But investors should distinguish between what Huang proposed and what has actually happened.

There is currently:

  • No confirmed $1 million acquisition
  • No public acceptance from Racer
  • No confirmed agreement with Paradigm
  • No announced Friend.tech relaunch
  • No ability to regain administrative control over the original contracts

FRIEND also remains more than 99% below its original $3.26 launch price, despite the latest explosion.

For now, traders are essentially betting that Machi Big Brother can turn one of SocialFi’s biggest abandoned projects into a comeback story.

And considering he once put $16.7 million into FRIEND, Huang has considerably more riding on that comeback than the $1 million he’s offering to buy the brand.

FRIEND may have jumped 1,350% in a day, but Friend.tech hasn’t officially come back from the dead — yet.
