Cypherpunk Launches World’s Largest Zcash Mining Fleet in $33 Million Winklevoss Deal

Cypherpunk Technologies is expanding its massive bet on Zcash by launching what it calls the world’s largest ZEC mining operation, giving the Nasdaq-listed company control of approximately 18% of the Zcash network’s total hashrate.

The new Cypherpunk Mining operation was created through a $33.33 million equity-based transaction with Winklevoss Capital, adding another major component to the company’s strategy of building its business around Zcash and privacy-focused technology

Cypherpunk Now Controls 18% of Zcash Mining Power

Cypherpunk Mining launched with approximately 4.2 GSol/s of Equihash hashrate distributed across mining facilities in the United States.

According to the company, that represents approximately 18% of the entire Zcash network’s current hashrate, immediately making Cypherpunk Mining the network’s largest active mining fleet.

The scale of the operation includes several significant numbers:

  • $33.33 million value of the mining transaction

  • Approximately 4.2 GSol/s of Zcash mining power

  • Roughly 18% of Zcash’s total network hashrate

  • Mining operations distributed across U.S.-based facilities

  • Approximately 43,800 ZEC currently awarded to miners across the network each month

The transaction gives Cypherpunk direct access to newly mined ZEC rather than requiring the company to acquire all of its cryptocurrency through the open market.

Winklevoss Capital Receives Cypherpunk Equity

Rather than paying cash for the mining operation, Cypherpunk structured the $33.33 million acquisition as an equity-based transaction involving Winklevoss Capital.

Cypherpunk Mining acquired the latest-generation Z15 Pro mining machines and their related hosting agreements from Moria Mining.

In exchange, Winklevoss Treasury Investments received a pre-funded warrant allowing it to purchase approximately 43.29 million shares of Cypherpunk common stock at an exercise price of $0.001 per share. The transaction valued the underlying Cypherpunk shares at approximately $0.77 each

Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss said the acquisition gives public-market investors an opportunity to gain exposure to Zcash mining that has previously been difficult to access.

Cypherpunk Wants to Own 5% of All ZEC

Mining fits directly into Cypherpunk’s aggressive Zcash accumulation strategy.

The company currently holds approximately 323,394 ZEC, representing about 1.92% of Zcash’s circulating supply, making Cypherpunk the largest corporate holder of the privacy-focused cryptocurrency.

But the company wants considerably more.

Cypherpunk has established a long-term goal of accumulating 5% of the total ZEC supply. Because Zcash has a fixed maximum supply of 21 million coins, that target would eventually amount to approximately 1.05 million ZEC.

Previously, Cypherpunk’s strategy depended heavily on purchasing ZEC for its treasury. Mining now gives the company another way to increase those holdings.

Cypherpunk says its mining operation could produce ZEC at costs significantly below purchasing the cryptocurrency at spot-market prices.

Mining Could Create a New ZEC Revenue Engine

The strategy also changes Cypherpunk from primarily being a corporate holder of Zcash into an active producer.

Will McEvoy, Chief Investment Officer at Cypherpunk, said the ZEC generated through mining could give the company greater financial and operational flexibility.

Mining revenue could potentially be used to:

  • Purchase additional ZEC for Cypherpunk’s treasury

  • Expand the company’s mining infrastructure

  • Finance investments in new privacy technologies

  • Support future company growth

  • Reduce reliance on continually raising capital to purchase ZEC

The company estimates the addressable Zcash mining market is worth more than $250 million annually at current ZEC prices

Cypherpunk Says Zcash Mining Can Beat Bitcoin and AI Infrastructure

Cypherpunk has appointed longtime crypto mining executive Kevin Zhang as its new Head of Mining.

Zhang began mining Bitcoin in 2014 and Zcash in 2016. He later worked at Foundry, where he helped build major Bitcoin mining infrastructure and what became one of the world’s largest Bitcoin mining pools.

According to Zhang, approximately 1,440 ZEC is awarded to miners each day.

He argues that current Zcash mining economics remain attractive even if additional miners enter the network, claiming that at current ZEC prices, Zcash mining can generate stronger returns than both Bitcoin mining and AI data-center colocation

That comparison is particularly significant as many Bitcoin miners have increasingly redirected power capacity toward artificial intelligence and high-performance computing operations.

Cypherpunk Is Building a Privacy Technology Ecosystem

The mining expansion is only one part of Cypherpunk’s broader strategy.

The company has been positioning itself as a publicly traded proxy for exposure to the Zcash ecosystem while simultaneously investing in privacy-focused technology.

Its strategy now includes three major components:

  • A large ZEC corporate treasury

  • The new Cypherpunk Mining operation

  • Investments in privacy infrastructure including Zcash Open Development Labs, known as ZODL

ZODL develops one of the most widely used wallets within the Zcash ecosystem.

Cypherpunk believes these businesses can reinforce one another. Mining produces additional ZEC for its treasury, while increased mining power can contribute additional security to the Zcash network. A stronger Zcash ecosystem could, in turn, increase the value of the company’s existing ZEC holdings.

18% of Network Hashrate Also Creates Concentration Questions

Controlling approximately 18% of a blockchain network’s total hashrate gives Cypherpunk considerable influence within the Zcash mining ecosystem.

The company argues that its additional mining capacity strengthens Zcash network security and contributes to the broader ecosystem.

However, such a large share of mining power concentrated under one publicly traded company also makes decentralization an important metric to watch as the operation grows.

Cypherpunk’s goal of simultaneously becoming a major ZEC holder, miner and investor in Zcash infrastructure makes the company increasingly interconnected with the overall performance of the network.

Cypherpunk Is Turning Its Zcash Bet Into an Operating Business

Cypherpunk’s latest move represents a major evolution of the corporate crypto treasury strategy.

Companies such as Strategy popularized the model of raising capital to accumulate cryptocurrency on corporate balance sheets. Cypherpunk is taking that concept further by acquiring infrastructure capable of producing the same digital asset it wants to accumulate.

Instead of simply buying ZEC and waiting for its value to increase, Cypherpunk can now mine new coins, add some of that production to its treasury and potentially use additional mining revenue to finance future expansion.

With nearly 2% of circulating ZEC already under its control and approximately 18% of the network’s mining hashrate, Cypherpunk is becoming one of the most influential corporate participants in the Zcash ecosystem.

If the strategy succeeds, it could provide another model for publicly traded crypto treasury companies looking to evolve beyond simply holding digital assets and into operating the infrastructure that produces them.
