Cloudflare Launches Stablecoin Wallets Giving AI Agents the Ability to Pay Across the Internet

Cloudflare has unveiled Cloudflare Wallets, a new programmable stablecoin wallet system that allows AI agents to independently pay for APIs, online content, cloud services, and other digital resources. The rollout introduces a critical piece of infrastructure for the emerging agentic economy, enabling autonomous AI systems to make secure micropayments while operating within spending limits set by their human owners. The launch builds on Cloudflare’s Monetization Gateway and its adoption of Coinbase’s x402 protocol, creating a complete payment framework for machine-to-machine commerce.

The announcement signals another major milestone in the convergence of artificial intelligence and blockchain technology. As AI agents become increasingly capable of performing complex online tasks without human intervention, Cloudflare aims to give them a secure digital identity and programmable wallet so they can purchase information, compute power, APIs, and premium content automatically while remaining under strict financial controls.

AI Agents Can Now Have Their Own Wallets

Cloudflare Wallets introduces two distinct wallet types designed for autonomous AI operations.

The system includes:

  • Account Wallets, owned and funded by individuals or businesses.
  • Virtual Wallets, assigned to individual AI agents.

Human owners fund the Account Wallet, then allocate spending limits to Virtual Wallets used by their AI assistants. This allows agents to purchase digital services without requiring repeated human approval while preventing unrestricted spending.

Built for Agentic Commerce

The wallets are designed specifically for AI-driven transactions.

Examples include AI agents paying for:

  • API requests.
  • Premium datasets.
  • Online articles.
  • AI inference services.
  • Software tools.
  • Cloud computing resources.

Rather than relying on subscriptions or manually managed API keys, AI agents will be able to complete transactions automatically using stablecoins through the x402 payment protocol.

Programmable Spending Controls

Cloudflare emphasized that human oversight remains central to the system.

Wallet owners can define:

  • Spending allowances.
  • Approved merchant lists.
  • Maximum transaction sizes.
  • Human approval requirements for unusual purchases.

These controls allow organizations to safely deploy AI agents while limiting financial risk if an agent behaves unexpectedly or encounters malicious services.

Powered by Coinbase’s x402 Protocol

Payments will be processed using Coinbase’s x402 protocol, an open standard designed for internet-native micropayments.

Instead of requiring users to create accounts or subscribe to individual services, websites can simply return payment instructions when an AI agent requests access. The agent then pays instantly using stablecoins before receiving the requested content or API response.

The protocol is intended to eliminate friction for both buyers and sellers while making pay-per-use digital services economically viable.

Wallet Rollout Begins in Phases

Cloudflare has opened reservations for wallet handles through cloudflare.pay, allowing users to secure their digital identity today.

Additional functionality—including:

  • Stablecoin deposits.
  • On-ramps and off-ramps.
  • Virtual Wallet creation.
  • Autonomous AI payments.

will be introduced over the coming months as the platform expands.

A New Internet Economy Emerges

Cloudflare believes the internet is rapidly shifting from human-driven browsing toward autonomous agent-driven commerce.

As businesses increasingly deploy AI assistants to research information, purchase services, negotiate contracts, and complete digital workflows, secure identity verification and programmable payment infrastructure become essential components of the next generation of the web.

Cloudflare says its Wallets platform is designed to provide both.
