In a move stirring debate, the Arkansas State House passed two bills aimed at potentially curbing crypto mining activities in the region, as reported by local media. While these bills are not yet law, they signal a shift from previous support for crypto mining, with over 90% of lawmakers backing a policy to safeguard it last year.

Critics of crypto mining highlight its significant power consumption and environmental impact. Beyond electricity usage, concerns include e-waste generation and economic losses.

For instance, Bitcoin mining alone reportedly produces over 77 kilotons of electrical waste annually, with analyses suggesting substantial economic losses for countries like the US and China.

The bills passed in the House await further deliberation in committees before potentially becoming law. The scrutiny comes amidst crucial elections where crypto voters are expected to play a significant role, adding complexity to the debate surrounding crypto regulation.
