Grayscale Launches First U.S. Zcash ETF as ZEC Surges

Grayscale has officially launched the first U.S.-listed exchange-traded product dedicated solely to Zcash, bringing the privacy-focused cryptocurrency to traditional brokerage accounts after converting its nearly nine-year-old Zcash Trust into an ETF.

The Grayscale Zcash ETF, trading under ZCSH, debuted on NYSE Arca on August 25. The fund directly holds ZEC and allows investors to gain exposure to Zcash without purchasing, storing or securing the cryptocurrency themselves.

The launch comes after ZEC surged approximately 45% over several days, continuing a major recovery that recently pushed the privacy coin to its highest levels since 2018.

ZCSH Brings Zcash to Traditional Brokerage Accounts

ZCSH is the conversion of the Grayscale Zcash Trust, which launched in 2017 and had approximately $260 million in assets immediately before becoming an exchange-traded product.

The fund is passively invested in ZEC, with its value designed to reflect the cryptocurrency held by the fund minus expenses and liabilities.

Key details include:

  • Ticker: ZCSH
  • Exchange: NYSE Arca
  • Management fee: 2.5%
  • Custodian: Coinbase Custody
  • Administrator: BNY
  • Benchmark: CoinDesk Zcash Benchmark Rate

Unlike purchasing ZEC directly, investors don’t control the underlying cryptocurrency or private keys. Instead, they buy shares through the same types of brokerage accounts used for stocks and other exchange-traded products.

Grayscale Will Direct Fees Back Into Zcash Ecosystem

One of the most interesting parts of the launch is what Grayscale plans to do with its management fees.

The company says 100% of ZCSH management fees will support Zcash ecosystem development and marketing activities for the fund for up to 12 months, although Grayscale can modify or discontinue the commitment.

That creates an unusual relationship between the investment product and the underlying crypto network.

As assets in ZCSH grow, the 2.5% management fee could generate additional funding supporting development and adoption of Zcash.

Zcash’s Privacy Technology Takes Center Stage

Zcash launched in 2016 and is best known for using zero-knowledge cryptography to provide optional transaction privacy.

Unlike transparent blockchains where transaction details are publicly visible, Zcash supports shielded transactions designed to protect information about senders, recipients and transaction amounts.

Grayscale believes that feature could become increasingly valuable as artificial intelligence makes financial activity easier to analyze at scale.

The company’s Head of Index, Steve Vanourny, specifically connected growing AI capabilities with increasing demand for financial privacy when announcing ZCSH.

That makes the launch particularly significant because privacy coins have historically faced greater regulatory scrutiny than cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.

ZEC Surges Ahead of ETF Debut

The ETF conversion had already become a major catalyst for Zcash before trading began.

ZEC recently climbed to nearly $850, its highest level since 2018, as investors anticipated the ETF conversion. Futures activity also exploded, with approximately $9.5 billion in 24-hour derivatives volume during the rally.

The move represented a dramatic recovery after ZEC plunged toward $250 in June following disclosure of a counterfeiting vulnerability affecting its Orchard shielded pool. Developers subsequently patched the issue through a network upgrade.

The ETF now introduces another potential source of demand by making ZEC exposure accessible through traditional investment accounts.

Zcash Becomes Wall Street’s First Privacy-Coin ETF

The launch expands the rapidly growing range of cryptocurrency investment products available in the United States.

Bitcoin and Ethereum opened the door, while regulated exchange-traded products have since expanded into cryptocurrencies including Solana, XRP, Dogecoin and Litecoin.

Zcash brings something different to that market.

Its primary value proposition isn’t simply payments or smart contracts. It’s financial privacy.

Grayscale is betting that privacy could become more valuable as AI, digital payments and blockchain analytics make financial activity increasingly transparent.

ZCSH therefore represents more than another altcoin investment product. It puts one of crypto’s best-known privacy technologies directly inside the traditional U.S. brokerage system.

After operating as a trust since 2017, Zcash can now be accessed through NYSE Arca without investors ever needing to hold ZEC themselves.

That marks a significant milestone for both Zcash and the broader acceptance of privacy-focused digital assets within traditional finance.
