The cryptocurrency exchange industry is facing another major shakeup as BitMart announced it will permanently wind down its global trading platform, sending its native BMX token plunging nearly 70% in a matter of hours. The announcement comes just days after BitMEX revealed it would also cease operations later this year, marking the second high-profile centralized exchange shutdown in less than a week.
BitMart Begins Orderly Shutdown
In a statement posted on X, BitMart said the decision followed a review of the company’s “operating conditions, market environment, and future strategic direction.” The exchange has already stopped accepting new registrations, deposits, and new trading orders as it begins a phased shutdown of its platform.
Under the company’s timeline:
- New registrations and deposits have ended.
- Futures accounts have been placed in reduce-only mode.
- All spot and futures trading will cease on August 26, 2026.
- Users are encouraged to complete withdrawals before August 26 to avoid potential processing delays.
- The platform will officially terminate trading operations on January 31, 2027, while maintaining limited account access for withdrawals and records until then.
BMX Token Loses Most of Its Utility
The announcement immediately triggered a massive selloff in BMX, BitMart’s native exchange token.
The token fell by as much as 70%, as traders rushed to exit positions after realizing that BMX’s primary use case—trading fee discounts, platform rewards, and exchange benefits—would largely disappear once BitMart shuts down. Trading volume surged as investors attempted to liquidate their holdings before liquidity deteriorated further.
Like many exchange tokens, BMX derived much of its value from the continued operation of the platform itself. Once the exchange announced its closure, that utility—and investor confidence—collapsed almost instantly.
Users Urged to Withdraw Funds Early
Although customer withdrawals remain available, BitMart warned that increased demand and enhanced compliance reviews could delay processing times.
The exchange advised customers to:
- Close all open positions before trading ends.
- Redeem staking, lending, and Earn products.
- Cancel outstanding orders.
- Download account and transaction history.
- Submit withdrawal requests well before the August deadline.
The company also noted that some withdrawals may require additional Know Your Customer (KYC) and compliance checks before being approved.
Second Major Exchange Closure in One Week
BitMart’s announcement follows BitMEX’s decision to shut down after an 11-year run that helped pioneer the cryptocurrency derivatives industry. While BitMEX cited a strategic business review, BitMart attributed its closure to changing market conditions and long-term business strategy.
The back-to-back announcements highlight how increasingly difficult it has become for mid-sized centralized exchanges to compete against dominant players such as Binance, Bybit, and Coinbase, while also facing growing competition from decentralized exchanges.
